Martin Luther King Day of Service Community Opportunities

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities.
The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District will celebrate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 16th.
Service projects throughout the district include:

The Hillendale community is collecting school supplies, gently used books and backpacks to support the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project.  The HES children will help stuff the backpacks full of donated supplies during our Day of Service program. The backpacks will be delivered to La Comunidad Hispana (a community center located in Kennett Square dedicated to empowering immigrants and low-income residents of southern Chester County).

We will also be making soup, sandwiches and cookies to be delivered to a local shelter for disadvantaged families and to the Catholic Social Services organization in West Grove, PA.  We also send homemade placemats and special cards to send with the soup and sandwiches.
These opportunities will be provided in two sessions:
Session #1 9:00 -10:00
Session #2 10:15 - 11:15

We need volunteers for the following activities during each session:

Cook Soup, bake Cookies, make snack mix, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, make place-mats, make cards, decorate bags, prepare backpacks

CFES adopted a sister school in Philadelphia.  The school is S. Weir Mitchell Elementary.  They collect and raise funds for the school all different ways throughout the year and have regular drop off times to support their students.  They have also started a pen-pal project with them.  CFES decided to do this as a way of living MLK's vision throughout the year and as a demonstration of ongoing service to our community.  This year, we will be encouraging our staff and students to support any other building project happening on January 16th.

Unionville Elementary School will have its First Annual MLK Day of Service -
“Blankets for Buddies”. Join us on Monday, January 16th in the UE Cafeteria from 9:30-11:30 am, when they will be making fleece blankets for children with long term illnesses at A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital. Participating families will be provided with a blanket-making kit so that parents and children can work together to make these special gifts for sick kids.
Coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

If you and your child are interested in participating, a Google sign up document will be circulated to UE families in the first week of January. You can also contact Committee Chairs Micki Tilley ( or Jackie Knight (

UHS NHS will host their annual MLK Day of Sharing. Though the food drive has been moved to March, there are tons of other opportunities that are available throughout the community. We hope that you consider spending some time volunteering for one of the fantastic organizations that we work with.
You are more than welcome to bring your family, friends or organize volunteering with a team or organization that you work with. Please feel free to spread the word!

Patton Middle School is providing an opportunity for our students to make part of their day off, a day on Monday 16 January 2017. This year our students will be working outside in assisting clean up at Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square. We look to be working alongside students from Kennett Middle School students as well.

The general information for the day is to meet at the Patton Middle School at 8:30am with work gloves in hand, district transportation to ABN Park, on site for clean-up efforts, and arrive back at Patton 12:00pm.

If your son / daughter desires to serve, please have them complete the brief electronic registration found on the Patton Home page by Friday, January 13th. Additionally, look for your son/daughter to bring home a brief parent letter/medical form to review and complete. Thank you very much for your consideration of this service opportunity in support of others. If you have any questions, please contact Patton Middle School Assistant Principal, at 610-347-2000 x3810.
