Harini Peri, Longwood Rotary Student of the Quarter

UHS student Harini
Harini's guidance counselor for this her senior year is Lora Elfreth. Lora became Harini's counselor in a change of assignment made to equalize the workload among Unionville High School counselors. In Lora's opinion, the day the assignments were changed was a lucky day for her.

Lora recommended Harini for recognition because of Harini's leadership in student service organizations. Harini started McConnect, which supports the Ronald McDonald House. The McConnecct members conduct toy drives, raise funds with bake sales and become pen pals with kids staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Delaware.

Harini raises money for Stop Hunger Now, which she learned about when she attended RYLA in her sophomore year. It was participation in RYLA that brought out Harini's leadership qualities.

Now Harini has the following leadership positions:
  • co_President of the high school choir
  • a board member of the National Honor Society
  • President of McConnect
  • Vice President of the Music Honor Society
  • Secretary of the Red Cross Club
  • Communications Director of the Operation Smile club
In addition to her leadership roles, Harini is a tutor at The Garage, and raises money and collects food as a member of the Stop Hunger Now club.

When she was about 10 years old visiting her grandmother in India for the summer, Harini realized a lot of the girls living near her grandmother's apartment were not attending school because they could not afford the $200 fee required. Harini talked her grandmother into paying the fee for 2 of the girls and Harini tutored them. This led Harini to start the Rise Initiative. Today everyone living in her grandmother's apartment building is contributing and helping tutor at least one of the local girls.

Harini does all this service because it makes her feel good on a bad day. Her real interest is music. Harini is involved in all the school plays and musicals, and competes in choir festivals. Last year Harini placed second in the District choral competition.

Harini is also a member of the Speech and Debate team. Last year she made it to the national championships in debate. This skill will be useful long term as Harini plans to focus in finance and law for her career. Harini is looking at University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, Northwestern or Harvard as her future school.
